The Scourge of Adonis Adaptation

Happiness mind-map

Have you ever looked closely at the anatomy of the word “behave?”  It is “Be & Have.”  It could be considered a universal truth that it is in the nature of all humans to seek to be more and have more.  In the psychological world they claim that as we become more and acquire more we adjust to our higher level of “being and having,” thus it becomes a “relative state” and we continue to seek more.  This human behavior is so prevalent they have even given it a name… Adonis Adaptation.  Sadly, what is more interesting is researchers have dubbed Adonis Adaptation as the main enemy of happiness.

So what then is happiness?  If achieving, acquiring and having more won’t obtain and sustain it, what will?  And why is happiness so important?  We could talk about that for the rest of our lives but in short, and as it applies to productivity in the work place,  employers want happy people!  Why?  They can teach the job, the skill set, the culture but they can’t teach attitude… they can’t teach happiness!  Happiness just makes everything more fun, it brings more positive energy, breeds momentum and builds strong culture!

In my short 48 years on this planet I have come to the determination that in order to obtain and sustain the highest levels of happiness we must behave ourselves.  It’s that simple.  Positive self leadership is the key.  It is not hard to do once you identify the things you truly value.  Once identified, become intentional around them.  Live close to that value system, honor it and manifest externally who you are becoming internally.  If, as you take inventory of yourself you find that there are areas that are out of alignment; don’t beat yourself up, just resolve to make the necessary changes to get back into alignment.   Life really can change on a dime.

It is a good cause to embark upon, after all, everything really does rise and fall on leadership and your legacy will be determined by who you were; not just what you knew.

Me & That Vacuum Cleaner Really Went At It (All The Time Thinking Who Does She Think She Is?)

Image

“For as long as I can remember, he said, I’ve always been an entrepreneur. I’m just a natural starter.  I’m visionary, I can just see it; so I go do it.”  Well that’s a great natural gift.  The problem sets in when they “just go do it.”

Entrepreneurs usually are natural visionaries.  They are global spectrum thinkers.  The moment they conceive an idea they see it all the way to the end.  Often they see it before anyone else does; it’s like their minds work in a state of natural combustion.  The issue arises in the speed at which they often move.  Even while the thought is taking form they shift from neutral to drive and they GO full speed ahead!  Most often they end up with a lot of production volume and poor cash flow due to shabby systems and poor management.  So now they are trapped!  They are so busy “keeping up” to meet the demands of their clients, they have no time to address the issues that are creating company bleed (the loss of profits.)  CoachesBelieveWhenYouDont

If it sounds like I know what I’m talking about; it’s because I do.  I’ve been right there in that same trap where sadly many entrepreneurs exist today.  It took me several years to find the answer and change my then “current reality.”  The answer came when I reluctantly hired a coach knowing full well I WAS NOT COACHABLE.

Did I say RELUCTANTLY?  You see my belief was this:  “I’m doing my best.  I don’t see how a coach is going to help me.  It’s not like I’m not an accountable person.”

At the time of this event I was a real estate professional.  I had built a team of other agents to work with me.  We were doing quite a bit of business (although more leads were dying on the vine then getting turned into closed deals.)  I was frustrated.  I hired a coach for $1000 a month.  That’s good money!  Several months into the coaching program we had clearly laid out the daily action items I was to perform to hit the production goal I set for myself.

As you probably know, it’s just a numbers game.  I knew my conversion ratios and my closing ratios so I was smugly on my way to achieving my goal.

For several weeks however, I had not been focusing on my daily action items and was not being accountable to my schedule.  I had a lot going on and I was erasing things but not replacing them.  Upon the second week of this behavior my coach asked me the following question:

Lisa, what would happen if your entire team began acting the way you are?”

I said “What do you mean?”  She said “Well if they just stopped lead generating?”  Immediately I jumped to my own defense!  I said (very sarcastically) “Michaelann!  I’M DOING MY BEST!”  A silent moment passed and she gently said:

“I know you are… but is YOUR best THE best?”  Well NOW I WAS REALLY HOT AROUND THE COLLAR!  I said:  “WELL I’VE DONE 102 DEALS THIS YEAR!”  Again, a short pause and a quite answer.  “I know she said;  I’ve done 732.”

At that I had to get off the phone!  I hung that phone up and grabbed my vacuum cleaner.  (I never vacuum, I hate to vacuum) but I VACUUMED!  All the while I’m thinking “How dare she?  Who does she think she is?  She has no idea what my life is like.”  And then it hit me… It was like someone had turned on a brilliant light!

My best was NOT the best…

For the first time in my life, I WAS COACHABLE!  I could finally see the value in that $1,000 a month.  Morning came and a phone call was immediately placed to St. Petersburg Florida… It went like this:

“Michaelann, I’m sorry and thank you for showing me that I am coachable.”

After that, we worked through the issues that had blocked my dedication, re-ran the numbers to make up for the lost time and it was onward and upward from there.

This experience was a great change-agent for me.  It is one of the main reasons I coach entrepreneurs today.  I know the money they are leaving on the table; the opportunities that are dying on the vine.

It is true that “He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.”  Ben Jonson

What Would It Mean In YOUR Life If You Could Do This Too?

Video

One of the most helpful lessons I learned in my life is to not be emotionally attached to the outcome of my efforts. I know you just read the last line here but did you comprehend it? Think about that!  What would it mean to you in your life if you could give it all you’ve got and then let it go?Health

When this idea was first presented to me I began working to incorporate it into my life; I recall it acting as a great filter and being very effective in helping me to let go of stress.  An example of the application of this executive coaching concept in my life played out like this:

It had been an extremely long day in real estate.  I was working on a transaction that had been very difficult to put together.  Things had been touch and go with this deal for the past several days.  This transaction stood to Net me about $12,000 and it was during a time that I could really use the income.  That evening I was watching the Yankees play and hanging the clothes that had accumulated in the chair in the corner of my bedroom all week when I realized my gut was in knots.  I was really worried about this deal falling!  I asked myself this question:

Have you done all you can do to make this thing go?

The answer was NO!  I could send one more email offering one final perspective in the negotiation.  I immediately dropped the clothes I was hanging, went to my office and sent the email.  As I entered back into my bedroom, turned the game back on and started again hanging the clothes my mind was at peace.  There was an over-riding feeling that was speaking to me saying:

“You’ve done your best; now forget the rest.”

Now in my daily efforts; I have with me a great sense of peace no matter what it is I am in the midst of.  After all I can do, I let it go and expect great things!  I hope you can too.

What’s Your Intention?

Fireworks #1

Lately I’ve been thinking on a single question so I’ll ask it of you:“What one thing (if you achieved it this year) would make 2013 the greatest so far in your life?”

I would love to hear your answer. Since discovering my own answer to that question I have done the following:

1. I set intentions around it! I wrote a statement of future results. I did this because in doing so I had to write it down. By writing it down I commanded it to my subconscious mind so it could get to work on completing it.

2. I got specific about it. I described it in great detail and then said “or something better.” Example: I will publish my book “Jesus; A Mighty Warrior” by December 31, 2013 or sooner! (That’s my something better.)

3. I scheduled my intentions into actions. (Daily Action Items)

4. The actions, that seemed overwhelming (like research) I broke down into manageable steps and for manageable amounts of time each day.

I guess I can pretty much count on 2013 being my best year ever! I hope you can too.

Nature? Nurture? NO PERCEPTION!

What came first science or philosophy?  Does it really doesn’t matter?  What does matter however, is which one can prove the other.  I have held a long time belief that science could prove philosophy and as it turns out, they just may have!  biologyofbelief

I recently read a book which I found to be astounding.  The title is “Biology of Belief” by Dr. Bruce Lipton.  Dr. Lipton is an American developmental biologist, who is best known for promoting the idea that genes and DNA can be manipulated by a person’s beliefs.  He felt so strongly about the correctness of his scientific findings that he resigned his positions as an Assistant Professor of anatomy at the University of Wisconsin School Of Medicine, and at St. George’s University School of Medicine, because of the disparity between his findings and what he was required to teach.   Now that’s a believer!

Interestingly enough Dr. Lipton dis-proves the possibility that we are all “fated” to a certain outcome from our DNA.  He also disproves our destinies are tied to and based on our cells (which he calls nurture.)  His amazing work, interestingly enough, proves the old trite saying “If you think you can; you can and if you think you can’t; you can’t!”

It is perception (which we hold in our subconscious mind) that determines our beliefs, our actions and ultimately our destiny!  WOW!  That’s good news!  The bad news is, our subconscious minds are a million times more powerful than our conscious minds.   But there is more good news!  We can learn how to reprogram them… and so the journey continues!

I guess it is really true that when you change the way you look are looking at something; what you are looking at changes!

My favorite quote was said by Erma Bombeck… “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me!”

Yep… that about sums it up.  That’s all I have to say.

Ignite Your Personal Power!

Image

Where your focus goes, your energy flows”… Walt Emerson.  I have experimented on his words and can attest they are true!  Could this be the reason we seem to be short of energy most days?  Because it is constantly flowing out of us in a million different directions?  personal power

I believe that we as women are constantly receiving the subtle message that more is required from us.  In many cases we are managing the finances, have primary responsibility for the care and nurture of the children, planning the family vacations, keeping the house, doing the laundry, the grocery shopping, tending the pets, preparing the meals, the yard work and in some cases even running a home based business!

When is enough ever enough?  When we recognize and mobilize our own inner voice that’s when!  Now I’m not talking about selfishness; I’m talking about high levels of achievement on your own terms!

Everyone’s definition of success is different. To some it may be becoming a New York Times best-selling author.  To someone else it may be being a good mother.  To yet another it may be living an authentic life or being a good daughter to aging parents.

My definition of success is achieving your goals (whatever they may be) on your own terms with an authentic expression of who you are.  With so many voices talking to us; it is sometimes hard to hear the most important one… the one who really does have all the answers… our own voice!

It is possible to live a joyful energetic life; counter balancing the myriad of responsibilities we have.  We can even make more money in our businesses if we choose to!

The secret is living a life by design!  A life YOU design and that’s what igniting your personal power is all about!

I’m sharing my journey and the way I achieved my life by design at the upcoming Interactive Women’s Conference at Boise Centre on the Grove, May 11, 2013.  Boise Idaho.  I hope to meet you there!

Until then, Onward & Upward My Friends!  Lisa
