Have you ever really looked at one of those 16 foot farm gates? When I was a little girl I used to love to swing on the pasture gate as it opened & closed. The further I was towards the outside perimeter the more fun it was! When it opens, it swings very wide. But if you really look you’ll see the end at the hinge side is moving ever so slightly, while there is great movement at the perimeter! As I’ve grown older I’ve realized the importance of the end with the hinges. (The side that didn’t feel like much fun at the time.) It is the little things upon which life turns that make the big difference.
Being 57 days into my 2013 Productivity Challenge, I realize the truth of the statement “Out of small things proceed that which is great.” The continuity of the seemly small daily action items that show up on our agenda as our “to-do’s,” are like the hinges. Over time, consistently completed, they swing wide like the perimeter of the gate and create great things in our lives.
Now every time I watch a farm gate swing open, it is as if it is emphasizing to me the importance of watching the little things.
